In his first public feedback about UCLA’s deliberate entry into the Large Ten, Bruins basketball legend Invoice Walton blasted the choice and mentioned he hopes the transfer is rescinded.
Walton, silent on the matter for 4 months, issued a press release Tuesday that was obtained by the Hotline.
In it, he directed criticism at UCLA’s “highest-level administrators of athletics” for making a choice that’s “about cash,” doesn’t serve the athletes and runs counter to the varsity’s mission.
“I don’t consider that becoming a member of the Large 10 is in the perfect curiosity of UCLA, its college students, its athletes, its alumni, its followers, the remainder of the UC system, the State of California, or the world at giant,” wrote Walton, probably the most iconic athletes in Pac-12 historical past and an NBA Corridor of Famer.
UCLA and USC introduced their departures for the Large Ten on June 30, with a begin date of Aug. 2, 2024, following roughly 100 years within the Pac-12 (and its prior variations).
The transfer created an existential disaster for the Pac-12, with the ten remaining colleges contemplating choices whereas they search a media rights settlement that might bind them collectively for the rest of the last decade.
Right here is Walton’s assertion (unedited):
UCLA’S WRONG TURN
All progress requires change … not all change is progress,
I’m Invoice Walton,
I’m a California native, resident, engaged citizen, voter, and taxpayer,
I’m a product of California’s terrific public college programs,
I’m a proud UCLA alum,
I’m not in favor of UCLA’s latest introduced choice to go away the Pac-12 Convention of Champions, nor their want to hitch the Large 10,
I don’t like this tried transfer,
I don’t assist it,
I hope it doesn’t occur,
UCLA is a public college that’s purported to serve the pursuits of the State of California,
UCLA is among the world’s biggest colleges, and types,
UCLA represents the perfect of what life has been, and may, might and needs to be,
UCLA has been as nice and as necessary part of my life as something, ever,
I don’t consider that becoming a member of the Large 10 is in the perfect curiosity of UCLA, its college students, its athletes, its alumni, its followers, the remainder of the UC system, the State of California, or the world at giant,
A number of the many the explanation why I’m against UCLA’s tried transfer to the Large 10 are, in no specific order:
* the destructive impression on the well being, each bodily and psychological, of UCLA’s student-athletes,
* the exponential improve in journey on UCLA’s student-athletes will damage them bodily, mentally, and of their total lives,
* the destructive impression of the extreme journey will prolong to households, pals, followers, alumni and everybody else,
* the elevated prices of becoming a member of the Large 10 will negate the projected elevated income assumptions of this proposed transfer,
* this proposed transfer to the Large 10 is opposite to UCLA’s and your complete UC System’s acknowledged and professed environmental sustainability targets,
this proposed transfer to the Large 10 has severe destructive implications and ramifications for the College of California, Berkeley and flies within the face of the supposed group idea that has all the time been part of the California Dream, plan and enterprise mannequin,
* this proposed transfer to the Large 10, is all about soccer, and cash,
* what about all the opposite 24 sports activities and 600+student-athletes at UCLA, who’re answerable for 99+% of UCLA’s Nationwide Championships,
* what number of of those “others” are represented and keen contributors on this proposed deal,
I went to UCLA— gladly, willingly, and proudly,
it was my dream,
that dream by no means included the Large 10,
I’ve spoken to nobody, apart from the highest-level administrators of athletics at UCLA, who assume that this proposed transfer to the Large 10 is a good suggestion,
each argument made by these senior AD’s and why they prefer it, is about cash,
these identical proponents of transferring to the Large 10, are the primary folks I’ve ever encountered in my life,
who’ve claimed financial hardship and limitations in Los Angeles,
and that the answer lies within the Midwest,
I’ve made my emotions recognized, privately, to the powers that be within the State of California, together with the UC’s Board of Regents,
my hope and dream is that this proposed transfer by UCLA, my alma mater, shall be rescinded,
